Back in the Saddle

So, it's no secret that I've been semi-retired from photoing for several months. Since photography for me is an elaborate hobby rather than a profession, I've had to focus on other things.

I still get the occasional request to make some photos for friends and family, but I've had to be selective about which of those I do in order to guard my time. However, my bother-in-law is getting married, so he asked me to do some engagements and bridals.

In the spirit of posting anything on this blog just to get some content out there, here are a few from the last couple sessions with Chase and Taylor.

These are Lightroom previews, not final edits, so please judge kindly!

SmugMug and Lightroom 3

One of the best photographic tips I ever received was also one of the most simple. It was from an article on workflow, and discussed a method for naming files. It may not seem like a big deal, but that one thing that took me about 30 seconds to implement has saved me hours and hours.

One of the simple features that I love in Lightroom 3 that I think has the potential to create MUCH more time for professional and amateur photographers is the built in Publish Services. While there are several third-party plug ins, the standard plug ins for Facebook, Flickr, and SmugMug are amazing.

So here's how I do it...

1. Create a Smart Gallery: If you don't already have a category for your gallery, right click on the the SmugMug Publish Service button to create one. Then, right-click on the category and select "Create New Smart Gallery."

2. Define which photos will be included. There are several ways to do this using Color Labels, Pick Flags, Keywords, and Star Ratings. Right now I use a combination of Pick Flags and Keywords. So if I want to publish photos in a folder to the Alaska gallery on SmugMug, I make sure the photos have a Pick Flag, and contain both Alaska and SmugMug in the keywords. When I set up the Smart Gallery, I make sure these are the criteria for included photos.

3, Select all the appropriate settings for your new SmugMug gallery and click ok.

3. The photos will magically appear in the SmugMug Smart Gallery. Now just right click the folder and select "Publish Now." The pictures are automatically uploaded to the SmugMug gallery.

The great thing about this process for me is that I use my SmugMug account to link to forums and blogs, and because Lightroom 3 keeps track of any changes I make to my photos, it will tell me if one of the photos in the Smart Galleries has been edited and needs to be re-published. All I do is click Publish again, and it not only updates on SmugMug, but everywhere else that links to SmugMug, including my blog and forums in which I participate.

I also love the way I can see my SmugMug folder hierarchy in Lightroom and make changes to SmugMug galleries directly from the software.

The same type of process is available for Flickr and SmugMug, although I haven't found a way to make the default "Photostream" folder "Smart" in the Flickr service.

The process isn't perfect, but maybe you will find a portion of it helpful.

Sunday Drive

Sunday we took an afternoon drive up to Squaw Peak, which is an overlook that can be accessed by going up Provo Canyon about 1 mile, and then following the signs on the right side of the Road.

We spent a couple minutes there, and were going to head up to Sundance, but discovered a road that runs the entire length of Timpanogas, from Provo to Hobble Creek Canyon. It's about 15 miles long and suitable for four-wheel drive vehicles only. Given the rough condition of the road, it took us about three hours. However, it was extraordinarily beautiful!

So, given the advent of the new Publish Services in Lightroom 3, I decided to clean out my SmugMug account and begin managing it with Lightroom. The two days have been spent keywording my catalog and exporting new albums to SmugMug. I love the new features, but the downside is that I have to go through and re-link every post I've ever made to the new photo locations in the SmugMug Albums.

We couldn't make it through the first fiscal quarter of 2010 without some medical bills on the books. Liam smashed his head into the corner of the nightstand while roughhousing with London (the culprit involved in Liam's broken leg), so we reward his vicious furniture headbutt with five stitches from the pediatrician.

The good news is that he's in the running for the lead in Harry Potter 82 with his natural forehead scar. We're counting on the royalties to pay the medical bills.

For those looking for inspiration and education from other photographers, I highly recommend The Candid Frame.

It is a blog/podcast presented by Ibarionex R. Perello, in which he interviews photographers from all disciplines. The list of names is impressive, and includes photographers such as Chase Jarvis, Douglas Kirkland, Dan Winters, and Greg Gorman, to name just a few.

The interviews are posted every two weeks and average about 45 minutes each.

It all started here, where I pulled over to take this picture on our detour to Zion's National Park...

You'd be amazed at how slippery that red mud is. My truck literally slid sideways all the way down the shoulder. After a nice man stopped to pull me out, it looked like this...

After realizing that I missed a turn and our 45 minute drive turned into 2.5 hours, we ended up at Zion's, here...

Only to be informed that there had been an avalanche and we couldn't get through. We'd have to wait an hour...

So, we pulled over to change the baby here, where we found out that a 20 month old child can indeed pull a vehicle out of park. I was forced to dive in the passenger side door and hand operate the foot brake, which was still muddy from the aforementioned truck-stuck event.

After eating a bad buffalo burger meal (never feel comfortable if the person at a restaurant says they are operating on limited supplies and a tight budget) we finally got through...

And it was worth the wait!

San Diego Zoo rocks! This place was huge, and had a lot of really cool places for good pictures that were unobstructed by glass or cages. i did have to shoot the little guy below from behind the ugly green zoo glass, but the family of gorillas was by far my favorite part of the zoo, so I thought I'd include him anyway.

We made it to the Magic Kingdom. Overall the kids did really well and enjoyed most of the attractions. London was very apprehensive (loud screaming) about the Haunted Mansion, and Logan refused to crawl through a couple dark tunnels in the faux rock inside the Indian Jones ride, despite my best persuasive logic. "Dad, stop trying to get me to break the rules!" I explained there were no signs prohibiting the activity, but the caves were dark and ominous, so I had that working against me. Liam slept for a couple of the hours, but enjoyed the Winnie the Pooh and Buzz Lightyear rides. He screamed when the line proceed past the animatronic buzz inside the ride. Mom was an unstoppable force of Disney Delight.

Day two consisted of making our way from St. George to Newport Beach. This is right after a Super 8 continental breakfast. We tried letting the kids burn off as much of the Fruit Loops sugar as we could before we loaded up for the haul.

London continues to be the only one of my kids that is patient enough to stand in front of the camera while I play with the lights. He loves being in the limelight, so this is one of about 30 unique faces he made for me while he was standing there. No direction needed.

He did have to go get a snack about half way through (hence the pretzel), and I'm sure he'd want you to know that the purple lines on his fingers are Wolverine claws!

#7: Reveal a Subject's Hobby

This post will feature one of the most brilliant and talented artists I know.

I had the privilege of meeting Randy Chamberlain three years ago at his ranch near Kanab, Ut, and have since never ceased to be amazed by the art that effortlessly manifests itself from his unique mind. His pieces, almost exclusively inspired by bikers, can be found in galleries across the Western States. For a more in depth look at his work please click HERE to visit the R.Garth Studios website.

Randy was kind enough to allow me to come to his home studio to photograph him working on "Missy Flies," a tribute to a unique biker from Arizona. A description of the inspiration behind the sculpture is found here, in the artist's words, following the photograph. Please click the picture to view a larger version.

"A gnarly road is portrayed with double yellow center lines and runs almost the full length of the piece, the road symbolizes the road of life with all its unpredictability and is a facsimile of one of those stretches of state highway running from Arizona into Nevada, long forgotten by the state road department, the last time it had a chip seal was around 1957, randomly edged and deeply fractured like an old Navajo's face, and pot holes that will (as your day dream suddenly ends) swallow your front end and instantaneously blow both fork seals of even the newest street guide.

Floating along beneath the old road is the mother of all grim reapers who has for these last many years jealously and meticulously mirrored and shadowed Missy, patiently awaiting the opportunity to claim her. However… Missy's strengths keep this event at bay.

1 st and foremost, because of Missy's total love and dedication to her son Torque and his dependence on her.

And because Missy was taught to ride by her father and brother both men have run with the pack.

And that of Missy's pedigree, she grew up in a 1% er family, an outlaw biker gene pool for sure, street smart and world wise. She is defensively observant and physically strong with cat like reflexes.

But suddenly on this lonesome stretch of desert backroads the opportunity finally arrives ending the reapers decades long wait.

The old highway sharply curves and drops away, a recent flash flood has taken out the road, its abrupt end known only to the reaper who now seizes the moment, with precision. First, she brings her sickle down with great force narrowly missing the hogs back legs, the blade imbedding deeply into the blacktop. However, even before the asphalt chunks can hit the ground. Missy's hog is using them as a spring board to take flight.

This seasoned reaper is quick to use her powers of deception, deciding to give away her position by letting her ancient hooded robe appear from beneath the roadbed which has concealed her for so long, she knows this long sought prize is worth the risk .

These tactics are calculated to draw Missy's attention from the boney hand being thrust up through the pavement ready to snatch the sacred silver riding bell from off the hog's hind leg (the kiss of death to believing bikers), all within the time it takes to click of the safety of an 1911 this bitch reaper has made her long anticipated move.

But No! Not Tonight!

Anyone who has ridden with Missy will tell you “Ya, she takes huge risks sometimes, like blowing between tractor trailer diesels as they merge onto the loop 101 and that's even before the 1 st beer stop on a run and prior to the all out race back home to Hacienda Harley for the big party”. Friends will also tell you that she rides responsibly, “you know what she is going to do and when she's going to change lanes or turn, just by her body language”.

Missy has been taught to run with the big dogs (peg to peg at 110). Thusly sculpted in her trusty Hog's strict obedience and lightening fast reflex to take flight, now! And to the right! Following Missy down the freeway is like trying to follow an F/A 18 as it would strategically bank in and out of traffic. Pure freedom, in fact the following famous quote comes to mind, “We are all born into this world but most us never really live.”

Missy not only lives, she flies due in no small part to the fact that since a young age she was bought up to take no shit from anyone, thus the crowning middle finger proudly hoisted to the world as Missy Flies atop her hog!

Missy, I sure hope you explain to your big brother, Rick that we are close friends because I don't want an ass woopen' for sculpting you as a nude!

Ride well and fly high!"

The South Peak (I think) of Mount McKinley seen from inside of Denali National Park. It's the highest mountain on the North American continent, and the highest (from base to peak) vertical rise mountain in the world. Everest is of course the tallest, but the base starts at a much higher altitude than McKinley. The row of smaller peaks mid-frame are probably between 3,000 and 5,000 feet, just to put the height in perspective.

We saw several caribou in Denali. I think they enjoy tense standoffs with tour buses because they always had to walk right in front and stare us down.

There are many constants that we all accept as facts of life; gravity, death, taxes, and of course, the sun coming up in the East each morning.

Something that still baffles my brain is watching the sun rise in the West on a late Summer flight from Seattle to Alaska. It was dark when I left Washington, and the sun was well above the horizon when I landed in Fairbanks! I'm a fan of gravity, but if I could cheat death and taxes the same way I cheated the sun, that would be GREAT!

I was FINALLY able to get out on a meaningful shoot tonight, thanks to my wife's and children's patient cooperation. I've been in a no-shooting funk for weeks, so it was nice to break the photo fast!

I found this place a few months ago on a bike ride and have been itching to get back ever since. I manually blended three differently-exposed images in photoshop to reach the end result. It was a refreshing, albeit labor-intesive departure from overused HDR software.

I've been trying to find some opportunities to practice some product photos, so this last week gave me a couple opportunities.

We spent last week at a seminar with Robert Kiyosaki on how to raise capital. The seminar was incredible, and I'd recommend any of Robert's materials to anyone looking to increase the education about money.

In addition to the always enlighten education, Robert unveiled two new things. His new book "The Real Book of Real Estate" was one. Congratulations are in order for my dad who wrote three of the chapters.

The second was a new Rich Dad branded silver coin produced by the Old Glory Mint, which we own. It was a great week! I found some black acrylic for the coin shot at a place called Delvie's Plastics in Salt Lake. They were GREAT people, and I'd also recommend them to any photogs looking for something similar. Affordable, fast, and friendly, unlike GE Polymershapes. (Don't go there.)

Another Trip to Vegas

So I survived one more trip to Sin City this last week. I'm there once a year for a real estate exchange conference, so I always make it a point to get out and shoot a couple of the nights I'm there.

For this first one, Chris held a bare 580ex II to camera left, triggered by a MicroSync.

For this one we had to put the camera and tripod on the other side of the faller fence atop the footbridge. The wind was blowing like crazy, so Chris held the strap through the fence, just to make sure my camera didn't end up as the next victim of Vegas stupidity.

I can only take credit for the technical aspects of these pictures, because they are BreAna's idea. We plan on printing each one on 24 X 24 canvas and hanging in the basement in a horizontal row above the couch.

The Setup was pretty simple. The boys sat on the kitchen table and I blasted them with a couple shots from the 580ex II that I bounced off a silver umbrella. I retouched the skin some given the fact they are so close.

This is Robert, aka, Brother Click. I'm actually not sure I'm allowed to call him that, but I'm going to take the liberty here for the sake of entertainment. He gets the name from the fact that he always has his eyes (which aren't so great anymore) to a viewfinder and his fingers (which work fine, I'm sure I'll get one after he reads this) on a shutter button.

We'd probably shoot together more but he's a self-proclaimed work-aholic. I have to "give" him mandatory days off, which he ignores, so I might have to resort to some temporary firings soon.

Xtreme Snow Stampede

This an example of the type of event I'd like to shoot more.

We hosted a snowmobile race at Elkhorn Ridge Estates, our mountain subdivision in Malad, Idaho. I think it turned out pretty well, and there were some great shots to be had! I didn't get to man the camera as much as I'd like given the amount of work that was involved in running the race, but these are a few that I mananged to get off.

My father-in-law, his brothers, and his dad used to be in a band together. When we were staying there a few weekends ago, my wife found this old drum case in the basement, so we just HAD to throw an innocent child in there and put the smack down on him with the flashes!

Jake Easley at Around 395 Photography continues to be one of my greatest resources for all things photography. He also happens to be one of the most original artists I know in the industry. His sites are well worth a browse. (Blog, Website, Folio)

At Jake's suggestion, I looked at ShowIt Sites as a solution for a commercial photo site. The process is pretty simple. Download the program. Use the drag and drop interface. Upload. The whole process took me about 6 hours. I'll most likely change the look sometime soon, but wanted to get something up to curb my over exuberance.

Best of 2008

"Best" is obviously a subjective term that I use very loosely here. These aren't the best because they are technically sound or beautifully composed images. However, each represents a situation where I tried something that stretched my comfort zone and helped me grow in ability and confidence. I hope you enjoy at least one, and any feedback is always appreciated.

We were finally able to get together with Brooke and Jesse for the pictures of Reese. She was a little ornery at first, but once she got in her little tutu, she was right at home!

I forgot my stands and umbrellas, and we did the whole shoot in an 8x8 room, but I think we made the most of it!

My dad chartered a jet for Christy's birthday last week. We flew to Sun Valley, Idaho for dinner, and it was an awesome experience. This is one of the few things I've been able to shoot with the new camera.

Logan and I went to the point of the mountain to shoot the paragliders. It was fun to watch them. At one point there was a hawk flying with gliders, but I wasn't able to catch it in the frame. Here are a couple of my favorites from the shoot.

We're so happy for Randall and Candice, and the arrival of Cameron. If they weren't our best friends in the world, I think they would have thrown me out after sticking the camera in the baby's face for a half hour.

My sister-in-law Hayley agreed to help me with my most recent quest of figuring out the mysteries of the Canon Speedlite. I'm getting closer, but still have some issues to figure out before I feel comfortable shooting with them.

Hayley was such a sport and did a great job.

Business and Pleasure

I found this ratty old house just South of our project in Malad, ID. It's the perfect kind of subject for HDR: lots of fine detail, large tonal ranges, and tons of color.

The Pepsi bottles are sitting exactly like I found them. In fact, it looked like sharp edges from the broken tops had been dulled by time.

I've take some heat on this one because of the bright highlights behind the bottle tops. Is it too distracting or does it pull the eye to the subject?

Man, I'm a slacker! It's difficult to shoot, process, print, post on forums and blog all the pictures that I'd love to do. Nevertheless, here are a few of my favorites from the last couple of weeks.

This is Logan's first day of school! I'm so proud of my little buddy! He's such a beautiful boy. Smart, kind and extremely intelligent. He's my Hero.

Then there's this one:

London is our little Sour Patch kid, and proof that there is opposition in all things! He is the family trouble maker and prankster, but he's also the sweetest dang kid I've ever met. I live for his Londie-Bear hugs.

And, the Beautiful Baby...

I don't know how you deny a little face like this! He's got such a purity to him. It's so disappointing to me when, for some reason, my boys stop looking me in the eyes, and it's nice to have that back in Liam. There's none of the pretense or discomfort that would come if you looked you neighbor in the eyes for 5 minutes straight. Just honesty.

Sunday night we went to the top of Butterfield Canyon behind the Kennecot Copper mine. It was all I could do to keep the kids stich-free and shoot at the same time. I'll post more as I get them processed.

Las Vegas

These are some from the Vegas trip.

Most ended up in Black and White. I didn't bring the tripod, so I shot high ISO and the noise made the color versions difficult.

This is a picture of the Las Vegas City Center project. It's amazing how huge the place is. I probably shot this from a half mile away.

Lady Liberty from New York, New York

From the tunnel at Balley's. This couple caught my eye.

I liked the sign on this building. It's obvious that someone is trying to push them out. You can see how the monorail and casinos have gone up all around them.

The last two are from the water show at the Bellagio.

Minneapolis

Here are a few from my recent trip to Minneapolis.

These first two are from the Westminister Presbyterian Church in downtown Minneapolis. I thought we were out of luck when we went and found the doors locked, but a custodian let us in and turned all the lights on for us. The church is gorgeous!

Besides being a good pilot, Chris is very cutting edge model! The color in this was all messed up from the stained glass, so I went B&W to salvage it.

These kids playing at Lake Minnetonka were great! They were having a ball doing absolutely nothing by the water.

This is from the Logan Cemetery across from the USU housing. With hundreds of students surrounding this place, you can imagine that the cops watch it pretty closely at night. I wasn't in here more than 45 seconds before I got spotlighted. So, I did what every good citizen would do...I parked across the street and walked in.

I painted the headstone and the tree with a flashlight to experiment. Unfortunately, this is the only shot I got off before being spooked out by another car that drove in and parked nearby.

Dave and I stopped at the Great Salt Lake on the way home from our Winnemucca trip on Saturday. Lots of good pics at the burnt out building off I-80.

Pony Express Ride

Dave, Dan and I rode part of the Pony Express trail today, About 120 mi in all. It was about 45 degrees, so not the most comfortable ride, but it was great time.

There were several places I wanted to stop for pics, but we were a little pressed to get home so as not to incur the wrath of our our wives.

I spent some time working in the new version of Aperture last night. I chose this particular image because I was having noise issues with files from Aperture 1.5 that had been migrated to 2.0.
